CAGED SOWS: NOT FOR SALUMIFICIO PEDRAZZOLI

CAGED SOWS ARE JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG OF FARMING PRACTICES NOT RESPECTING ANIMAL WELFARE

These days there has been renewed talk about the confinement of sows in cages, a problem that affects not only Italian production but rather the entire European Union.

The cruelty with which caged sows are confined, in small spaces and in very poor living conditions, unfortunately does not concern a few isolated cases.

An investigation conducted by Compassion in World Farming International, published at the begging of July, and also shared by the well-known newspaper The Guardian, showed that caged sows are forced into confinement that leaves them no space or dignity in 85 percent of EU farms supplying premium products (PGI/DOP). Critical conditions are the norm not only in standard farms, but also in those systems that produce higher-end products (which do not automatically meet necessary animal protection requirements).

Indeed we need to note that requirements are what make a farm sustainable in terms of welfare, rather than the type of final product.

SALUMIFICIO PEDRAZZOLI: MORE THAN THE MINIMUM STANDARDS TOWARDS THE ANIMAL WELFARE MISSION

By definition, at the regulatory level, organic farms are closer to the philosophy of respect, with requirements and regulations that certify them as sustainable on the matter of animal welfare.

Nevertheless, this is a basic requirement, a starting point from which each company can evolve to continuously improve, looking for further certifications and conditions that would make a positive difference, overtaking the minimum standards that make organic farming.

This is exactly the commitment that all of the farms that are part of Salumificio Pedrazzoli have. Since many years Salumificio Pedrazzoli is working on a positive evolution, in continuous improvement and in the changes that can further improve animal welfare, going far beyond the minimum requirements.

THE AWARDS OF SALUMIFICIO PEDRAZZOLI

Salumificio Pedrazzoli, a partner of Compassion in World Farming, is differentiating itself from the standards and current trends in farming with the rigorous approach it uses into all of its farms on animal welfare, as the criteria that are used are tighter that the standard organic norms.

All of these methods allowed for Salumificio Pedrazzoli to be awarded the Good Pig award twice in recent years, precisely for its efforts to promote, through its PrimaVera line, a farming philosophy protecting animal welfare and respectful of nature, and that does not include farms that force sows into cages.

Close to standards and in line with regulations and minimum requirements, Salumificio Pedrazzoli’s farms comply with the guidelines drawn up by Federbio for animal welfare, demonstrating that it is possible to combine production needs and sow welfare while producing products of the highest quality.

This happens thanks to closed-loop production, which we called farm-to-fork in a past article, and which favors environmental sustainability and animal safety.

In the coming weeks we will take you with us to one of our very own farms, in Piacenza, to demonstrate not only Salumificio Pedrazzoli’s commitment, but also the better conditions that sows experience when living outside of cages.
